What kind of questions are you asking when looking to crew?
When you are looking for opportunities to be on someone else’s boat, as a woman, for safety reasons, what questions are you asking about the skipper? About other crew already on the boat? How do you verify things?
Hi Dona! Thank you for the topic! I typically communicate straight through. I ask questions before meeting about the boat and experience levels of the owner/skipper/captain, as well as the crew. They want to know your skills as well. The more questions passed between you, the better. It shows interest and confirms sailing/team compatibility. I like meeting people on land before heading out. I also like to look at reviews and ask others for references and other details on their experience onboard. I like to connect on social media. If I feel uncomfortable, time schedules conflict, or there just isn’t the right vibe, it just means it’s not meant to be. I don’t like to push things. It’s all about safety, comfort, and fun for everyone. There shouldn’t be any pressure and everyone should feel at ease about the process of getting to know one other. If there is pressure, it’s probably not a good sign and it is an indicator to try another adventure! It is also a good idea to get to know the boat and set aside time to do this before being underway. Learn about safety protocols and all the rules onboard with the team!
thanks Kari!
I would also recommend finding out about any know medical condition your prospect crew may have, This is not a show stopper for me as long as it is managed, stable and med such as Inhalers, Epi-pen etc.. are provided and brought onboard with them.
Yes, thank you, Marcel!
