Good or bad experience on board?

I just wanted to know if someone sailed with unknown people before and how it went.

I did sail with strangers as crew and as skipper. Never had issues. You need to talk to the person first and if possible meet before boarding especially for a long trip. Did you have a bad experience?

One day I had someone on board who was sea sick. he did not tell us in advance and it was not fun for any of us. I did not have proper medicine on board. So now I always ask questions and I am prepared.

Hi Nathalie, I signed on with a captain last April in the Bahamas. We exchanged emails beforehand then had a telephone conversation. In the end there was three of us aboard who had never met before. Rick B stayed with us for about 10 days and departed in Fort Pierce. I stayed aboard for 29 days and departed in Norfork to get back to Canada. It was a great experience and we got along well. Captain C was experienced, pleasant and respectful.

Hope this helps.

Thank You for your reply. It gives me good tips and ideas. I have a boat but like to sail with others on other boats. I will be more proactive this year. Nath,

Yes, have gotten on boats with people I did not know before hand. Always have a voice call at a minimum, because you can tell a character from hearing a voice. Also, always be willing to leave if it doesn't feel right. That said, I've never had to leave. There are differences in style and personality, but one of the great things about boats is it forces people to handle themselves. People typically behave, and beyond that, are in fact generous and friendly.
